Swedish ports at record levels
In 2025, the Port of Gothenburg handled 934,000 TEU (20-foot containers). This represents an increase of 4 percent compared with the previous year and is also the highest full-year volume ever recorded in the port’s history. Ports of Stockholm also had a strong year, with growth in both cargo volumes and passenger traffic.
An expanding range of shipping services, congestion at other major European ports, and efficient rail connections between the port and the rest of Sweden are, according to the Port of Gothenburg, the main reasons why 2025 became another record year.
“Record volumes are proof that the port has become even more attractive as a logistics hub. We see several drivers behind this growth: the port’s range of deep-sea services has expanded significantly with two new direct services to Asia. The port’s rail system, Railport Scandinavia, is a stable and unique global network that continues to grow, providing efficient access to the port for all of Sweden,” says Claes Sundmark, Vice President Sales & Marketing at the Port of Gothenburg, in a press release.
The Port of Gothenburg states that its ambition is for as large a share as possible of cargo to and from the port to be transported by climate-friendly rail. In 2025, container flows by rail also increased by 5 percent to 529,000 TEU, marking yet another all-time high. The share of containers transported by rail now amounts to just over 60 percent.
As for the Port of Gothenburg’s intra-European RoRo traffic, 525,000 units were handled in 2025, a slight increase compared with the previous year. The number of passengers travelling to and from Gothenburg increased by 1 percent compared with 2024, reaching 1.4 million.
The Ports of Stockholm, one of the world’s largest passenger port systems, increased passenger volumes by 2 percent compared with 2024. In total, nearly 7 million passengers travelled across the Baltic Sea. Cruise traffic also rose significantly: 136 cruise ships called at the ports in Stockholm and Nynäshamn, and the number of cruise passengers totalled 256,000—an increase of 30 percent compared with 2024.
Cargo volumes also remained stable, amounting to nearly 7.5 million tonnes in total, a marginal increase year on year.
“It is gratifying to see a positive growth in both passenger traffic and freight volumes. Freight transport is vital to the region's supply of goods and development, while passenger traffic is increasing and strengthening Stockholm’s position in the Baltic Sea,” says Johan Wallén, Marketing and Sales Manager at Ports of Stockholm, in a press release.
