Unique demo display of container transport along Göta Älv

On March 7, Avatar Logistics show how containers can be transported along Göta Älv (Göta river) instead of on the road between Gothenburg and Vanersborg. The demonstration project is the first of its kind in Sweden.
There is much talk of inland waterways in Sweden right now. We at Lighthouse has done a feasibility study on inland waterways, the Swedish Maritime Administration has completed its report on the potential of inland waterways, it was a widely discussed topic at Transportforum in January and more than 100 people participated in the seminar on inland waterways, arranged by, among others, Lighthouse in Stockholm in February.
At the moment there is a variety of ongoing projects testing and developing the potential of inland waterways and one of the projects is now entering a new phase, with actual demo tests. The company Avatar Logistics, owned by Erik Thun AB, Ahlmarks Lines AB and VT Group Ltd will transport containers, using a barge, between Gothenburg and Vanersborg.
Avatar Logistics writes:
A barge adapted for the Göta River / Trollhätte canal can carry 50 containers and the logistic arrangement opens up new opportunities for shippers in the region. The capacity of a barge is equivalent to a large number of trucks currently in service on the congested road network.
Barge traffic is a given in many countries in Europe, but here in Sweden we have not yet included the EU-classed inland waterways in freight logistics. Inland navigation is energy and environmentally efficient, safe, reliable and can relieve road and rail network. Göta River / Trollhätte Canal going into Lake Vänern and Södertälje Canal into Lake Mälaren is classified as inland waterways for barge traffic. Inland waterway transport in these areas holds great potential for a more environmentally efficient and robust Swedish transport system.
On 7 March, Avatar, will show their demo project in Vanersborg Port. See PDF below (in Swedish) for info on how to register.
